This week marks 10 years at Mash Direct for Jenny, Head of Business Transformation! We caught up with Jenny to find out more about her amazing journey and how her role has evolved over the past 10 years.
What made you want to work in this role/how did you get into it?
After studying for my professional exams and qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in a mid-sized accountancy practice, I wanted to get into the finance team of a local manufacturing company. When the opportunity came to join a thriving, family run business in my home town, I knew I had to go for it.
Did you always see yourself working in this industry?
My professional training involved carrying out internal audits, financial audits, tax reviews and even some forensic accounting. After a number of years and a lot of client visits, I decided that I wanted to work with one team rather than across a portfolio of many teams. I didn’t see myself moving into the FMCG industry, but I am glad I did. As the name suggests, it is fast moving and you have to learn quickly which certainly keeps it exciting.
How has your role evolved over the past decade?
I joined Mash Direct as a Management Accountant completing the month end process and reporting on the company performance in the management accounts. As the business grew, I was promoted to Senior Management Accountant and oversaw the performance of the expanding finance team. More recently, I was promoted to Head of Business Transformation and I made the move out of the finance team and over to operations. This role involves reviewing current processes and implementing systems and digital platforms to improve efficiencies across the company.
Are there any mentors or colleagues who made a big impact on your journey?
When I joined the business, I had limited industry experience. Our Finance Director, Gary Armstrong, showed me the ropes and taught me a lot of what I needed to know to succeed in the role. Working with Gary really taught me the importance of being thorough in your analysis and providing meaningful financial information and also the ability to multitask to be able to manage the daily demands in the fresh vegetable business.
I have been inspired by the Hamilton family and their drive and passion for the company, bringing it from a discussion around the family dinner table over twenty years ago to the business it is it now with over 250 accolades– and still targeting more!
Our Operations Director, Des Ferris, recruited me into my current role and has further deepened my knowledge of the business at an operational level. Des has demonstrated the importance of collaborative teamwork and striving to continually improve processes and systems but also to continue personal learning and development.
I have made some great friends over the years who are some of the key reasons why I love my job – they know who they are!
Most importantly, what is your favourite Mash Direct product?
Skinny Fries, without hesitation!
